Hillman's Late Heroics Lift Vikes Over Timberwolves to Snap Losing Streak
After enduring a tough four-game skid, the Big Bend Community College men's basketball team hit the road to Pendleton, OR, determined to get back on track against the Blue Mountain Community College Timberwolves. In a game that came down to the final moments, the Vikings managed to eke out a thrilling 58-57 victory, thanks to a clutch three-pointer by Ian Hillman with just eight seconds remaining.
The game began in sluggish fashion for the Vikes, as they struggled to find their rhythm offensively. Shooting just 33% from the field in the first half, BBCC found themselves trailing 27-20 at halftime. Meanwhile, the Timberwolves capitalized on their opportunities, shooting 45% and holding a steady lead throughout the first 20 minutes of play.
However, the second half told a different story for BBCC. Coming out of the break with renewed energy and focus, the Vikes knocked down 52% of their shots and began chipping away at the seven-point deficit. With every possession growing more critical, the Vikings leaned on their defense and timely shooting to keep themselves within striking distance.
The game reached its dramatic conclusion in the final seconds. Trailing by two points, BBCC ran a well-executed play, setting up Ian Hillman for a deep three-pointer that found the bottom of the bucket with just eight seconds remaining, giving the Vikings a narrow one-point lead.
Head Coach Jason Hopkins immediately called a timeout to set up the defensive strategy for the Timberwolves' final possession. The Vikes executed perfectly, contesting the Timberwolves' last-second shot attempt and forcing a miss as the clock expired, securing the much-needed victory.
Gideon Harris led the charge for BBCC, putting up an impressive stat line with 22 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Gil Gonzalez also delivered a strong performance, contributing 16 points to help propel the Vikings to their hard-fought win.
With their losing streak now snapped, the Vikings improve their confidence and look to carry the momentum into their next game. BBCC is set to hit the road again on Saturday, February 1st, to face Walla Walla Community College, hoping to keep their season moving in the right direction.
