Vikings Split Windy Conference Opener, Eye Series Win on the Road
Big Bend Community College opened conference play at home against Wenatchee Valley on Wednesday, March 25th, in what turned into a wind-swept slugfest that featured dominant pitching, timely hitting, and one decisive inning in each game.
In Game 1, sophomore right-hander Chase Fleming delivered a stellar performance on the mound for the Vikings. Fleming tossed seven strong innings, allowing just two runs—only one earned—while striking out seven. His effort gave BBCC a narrow 3–2 lead heading into the eighth inning.
However, the momentum quickly shifted as the wind began to play a major factor. Reliever Cole McKinnon took over and was tagged for two home runs in the inning, as Wenatchee Valley erupted for six runs. The Vikings were unable to recover from the late surge, ultimately falling 8–3 after the backbreaking eighth.
Offensively, Kevin Garcia paced BBCC with an impressive four-hit performance, while Isaiah Aliksa contributed with a hit and two RBIs in the losing effort.
Looking to bounce back in Game 2, the Vikings turned to left-handed freshman Karter Wilson, who delivered an outstanding outing. Wilson threw five innings of one-run baseball, allowing zero earned runs while striking out four to keep BBCC within striking distance.
Trailing 4–3 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, the Vikings ignited a rally after a leadoff double from Jaime Ruelas. The offense came alive, plating four runs in the inning to take control of the game.
Closer Ricardo Leon Guerrero shut the door in the ninth, securing a 7–5 victory and earning the split for BBCC.
With momentum back on their side, the Vikings now prepare to travel to Wenatchee Valley this Saturday to wrap up the four-game conference series.
