Big Bend softball will be busy this week preparing for the 2019 Northwest Athletic Conference Softball Championship being held Friday through Monday (May 17-20) at the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex in Spokane. The Vikings earned the No.2 seed out of the Eastern Region and an overall No. 6 seed for the tournament.
Big Bend closed out its season on Friday afternoon splitting their final series with Wenatchee Valley. They dropped their first game 11-4 before rebounding to earn the split 15-7. The Vikings swept the Knights on the road on April 17th.
The Knights used a big 6th inning to break out of a 2-2 tie and tacked on 3 more in the 7th to pull away from Big Bend for the Game 1 win. Vikings starting pitcher Bailey Christensen took the loss giving up a total of 19 hits — the navy and green defense didn't help the cause making 4 defensive errors.
Big Bend returned to the field with a vengeance in Game 2 and put on a show of power at the plate with 5 home runs. Lynsey Valverde (16 & 17) Hanna Reid (10), Riley Newbold (8), and Aubree Barney (13 &14) each left the yard during the second session with Valverde finishing 4-for-5 with 7 RBIs.
Alyssa Ray (14-5) earned her 14th win of the season scattering 7 hits over 6 innings of work and giving up 5 earned runs.
With the final win, Big Bend finished the regular season with a 33-11 (25-7 in NWAC) record and an extremely impressive 17-4 total on the road. Inclement weather flipped the Viking's scheduled upside down early in the season forcing them to play their first 20 games of the season away from the BBCC campus.
On Friday in Spokane, Big Bend will take on 11-seed Olympic College. The Rangers finished their conference schedule with a 17-5 record and in 4th place in the North Region.
