Big Bend softball improved to 6-2 on the season after picking up four wins over the weekend during the Inter-Region Tournament held in Lacey, WA. 

Friday, March 8

Big Bend 4, Bellvue 14

The weekend got off to a rough start for the Vikings who dropped their opener to Bellvue. The Bulldogs touched up the Big Bend pitching staff for 13 hits (including 6 home runs).

Offensively, the Vikings could only manage 5 hits which included a home run from Maddie Bowles and a double from Taryn Matthews. Bowles also drove in 2 runs.


Big Bend 21, Highline 3

BBCC rebound in the second game on Friday winning in convincing style over Highline. The Viking bats erupted for 16 hits led by Aubree Barney who went 3-for-5 (including a home run) while driving in 6 runs. Maya Saneishi, Lynsey Valverde, Hanna Reid, Taryn Matthews, and Courtney Williams each picked up a pair of hits going 2-for-5. Saneishi and Valverde each drove in 5 runs to get the Vikings back on track offensively. 

Mayda Rieflin pitched 4 solid innings for the Vikings giving up 6 hits and issuing 3 walks while striking out 1. Bailey Christensen closed the door with 3 strikeouts in the 5th inning earning the save.


Saturday, March 9

Big Bend 17, Edmonds 11


Big Bend sophomore Bailey Christensen didn't have her best outing on the mound, but she spread out 16 hits and 5 walks over 7 innings of work pick up the complete-game victory for the Vikes.

BBCC managed 17 hits of their own led by Taryn Mathews who went 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and two home runs. Mathews also drove in 8 Big Bend runs. Six BBCC hitters produced multiple hits including Courtney Williams who went 3-for-5 with a trio of singles and an RBI. Riley Newbold and Lynsey Valverde also hit dingers during the early Saturday win.

Big Bend 2, Mt. Hood 11

The Viking bats went back into hibernation mode during the late game on Saturday verse Mt. Hood. BBCC batters could only manage 4 hits against the Saints pitching. Lynsey Valverde went 2-for-3 for the Vikes including a home run and Aubree Barney picked up a pair of singles to round out the Vikings offensively.

The Viking pitchers were roughed up for 15 hits — including 4 home runs, 3 doubles, and a triple.


Sunday, March 10

Big Bend 11, Chemeketa 4

The Big Bend bats got back on track Sunday and Bailey Christensen spread out 9 hits while striking out 4 and walking just 2 hitters over seven innings of work to hold off Chemeketa — her second complete-game win of the weekend.

Lynsey Valverde left the yard twice in the early game going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a walk. Christensen helped her own cause with a pair of hits and an RBI and Taryn Mathews also had a pair of hits (double) and an RBI.

Courtney Williams added a double and a couple of RBIs while Riley Newbold drove in three runs.


Big Bend 20, Skagit Valley 10

In Sunday's late game, the Vikings offense put up 20 runs while racking up 17 hits and drawing 10 walks en route to their fourth win of the weekend.

Big Bend's Alyssa Ray picked up the win working 4.1 innings before giving way to Bailey Christensen who worked the final 2.2 for the save.

BBCC has seven players with multiple hits on the afternoon including Hanna Reid who picked up 4 hits and 3 RBIs including a home run. Lynsey Valverde picked up another home run (her 6th on the season) to go with a single and 6 RBIs. 


The Vikings now have about a two-week stretch until they begin NWAC East Region play on Saturday, March 23 on the road at Blue Mountain.
