The Big Bend Community College softball had a historic 2018 season that saw the Vikings make a return to the Northwest Athletic Conference Championships for the first time since 2006. As No. 15 seed, Big Bend also made a little noise knocking off the No. 2 seed Douglas Community College in the tournament opener before dropping their next two games against Everett and Wenatchee.
It was the most successful season on the softball diamond in recent history, and that's why it's no surprise the Vikings had two players named to the East Region's All-Star team.
Freshman Lynsey Valverde, SS - second team
Valverde (Tremonton, UT/Bear River High School) hit an impressive .432 during her freshman season with 70 hits in 162 at-bats including 19 doubles and 19 home runs. She scored 68 runs for the Vikings and drove in 73 runs while picking up 27 walks and striking out just 7 times. Valverde also had 7 stolen bases.
Her 19 home runs put her in 4th place in the NWAC with three others tied for first with 20 and her 73 RBIs put her in a tie for fourth place in the NWAC. Here 68 runs earned her the 11th ranking in the conference.
At her shortstop position, Valverde boasted a .979 fielding position with just 2 errors in 55 attempts.
Sophomore, Bailee Nickelson, OF - second team
Nickelson (Reno, NV/North Valley High School) batted .388 on the season with 66 hits in 170 at-bats. The sophomore increased her 2017 batting average by .123 points (she hit .265 as a freshman). Nickelson had 7 doubles, a triple, and a home run. She drew 20 walks, struck out just 19 times, and stole 19 bases.
In the outfield, stats show that Nickelson did not make an error this season.
