BBCC Falls to The Falls in Tight Battle, Playoff Hopes Dwindle
With only three games left in the regular season, the Big Bend Community College men's basketball team found itself in must-win mode. On February 19, the Vikings hosted Spokane Falls Community College in a tightly contested matchup that went down to the wire.
BBCC came out strong in the first half, displaying elite defense and holding Spokane Falls to just 37% shooting over the first 20 minutes. Though the Vikings struggled offensively, their defensive effort allowed them to head into halftime with a 30-25 lead. Sophomore Gideon Harris led the way, knocking down three of four shots from beyond the arc and converting a perfect two-for-two from the free-throw line, tallying 11 points in just 11 minutes of play.
As the second half began, the Vikings found their rhythm offensively, improving their shooting to 52% from the field and 44% from three-point range. BBCC's defense continued to cause problems for Spokane Falls, but foul trouble proved costly. The Vikings committed numerous fouls, allowing Spokane Falls to attempt 28 free throws in the second half alone.
The game remained close until the final moments, but BBCC ultimately fell by a score of 75-70. A key factor in the loss was Spokane Falls' efficiency at the free-throw line, where they scored 26 of their 75 points. Additionally, turnovers proved costly for the Vikings, as Spokane Falls outscored BBCC 14-3 in points off turnovers.
Gil Gonzales led the Vikings in scoring with 20 points on an efficient 7-of-11 shooting performance. Harris followed closely behind with 18 points of his own.
Head Coach Jason Hopkins was unavailable for comment regarding the tough loss. With this defeat, BBCC falls to 4-8 in conference play, with just two games remaining in the regular season.
Up next, the Vikings will host Walla Walla Community College on Saturday, February 22, for Sophomore Night, a game that will serve as a final home showcase for BBCC's graduating players. The Vikings will look to bounce back and keep their postseason hopes alive in what promises to be an emotional and hard-fought matchup.
