BBCC Men's Basketball Faces Tough Loss Against Walla Walla Warriors
BBCC Men's Basketball hit the road after their bye week to face off against one of the Eastern Region's top seeds, the Walla Walla Warriors, on Saturday, February 1st. With the Vikings off to a slow start in conference play, they knew they had their work cut out for them against the formidable Warriors.
The Vikings came out strong in the first quarter, shooting 42% from the field, knocking down 10 of their 24 attempts, while holding the Warriors to just 35% shooting. However, the key difference in the half was the shot attempt differential. Despite BBCC's higher shooting percentage, Walla Walla managed 13 more shot attempts, resulting in the Vikings trailing 34-22 at halftime.
BBCC continued to shoot efficiently in the second half, converting 46% of their attempts. Unfortunately, Walla Walla found their rhythm, shooting 52% from the field, including an impressive 8-13 from beyond the arc. Although the Vikings ended the game with a higher overall shooting percentage (44%) compared to Walla Walla's 43%, the Warriors' 18 additional shot attempts proved decisive. The final score reflected this disparity, with BBCC falling 80-49.
Turnovers and second-chance points were the Achilles' heel for the Vikings. They were outscored 36-11 in these critical areas, committing 18 turnovers and surrendering 14 offensive rebounds, which played a significant role in their defeat.
Despite the loss, Gil Gonzalez led the Vikings with an efficient 17 points on 8-10 shooting, while Domink Wojna recorded his first double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Head Coach Jason Hopkins was unavailable for comment following the game. Up next, BBCC will hit the road again to face Wenatchee Valley College on Wednesday, February 5th, looking to bounce back and gain momentum in conference play.
