Coming off a series split with Centralia Community College, Big Bend Community College sought to build momentum as they hosted a round robin tournament, taking on Walla Walla Community College and Grays Harbor Community College with two games apiece.
BBCC opened play on Friday, March 7th, facing Walla Walla with sophomore pitcher Garin Gurtler on the mound. Gurtler was dominant from the start, going the distance for his first complete game of the season. He tossed nine innings, allowing just four hits and one unearned run while racking up six strikeouts. With Gurtler in control, the BBCC offense capitalized. Camron Fleck, Kason Bleckert, Ricardo Leon Guerrero, and Rory Swanson each collected two hits, with Leon Guerrero leading the way with three RBIs in what resulted in a 7-1 victory.
In game two, sophomore Dylan Schaefer got the start but struggled, lasting just 1 2/3 innings while surrendering three earned runs and walking four batters. Cole McKinnon took over and steadied the game, throwing 5 1/3 innings of one-run baseball. Meanwhile, the BBCC offense chipped away at Walla Walla's lead. Rylan Osbjornsen led the charge with three hits as the Vikings completed a valiant comeback, securing a 6-4 win. Nolan Soderstrom locked down his fourth save of the season to seal the victory.
BBCC carried their momentum into Sunday, facing Grays Harbor College in a commanding performance. Brendan McKinley took the mound and followed Gurtler's lead with another complete game, throwing seven innings of shutout baseball while allowing only two hits. The BBCC offense exploded, leading to a 10-0 mercy-rule victory. Ricardo Leon Guerrero and Rylan Osbjornsen each recorded three hits in the rout.
Looking to complete the weekend sweep, BBCC turned to freshman pitcher Owen Relkoff in the final game. Relkoff delivered, tossing five innings while allowing just one earned run and striking out four. The BBCC offense continued to shine, with Kason Bleckert leading the way with four hits. Roman Basurto, JT Penrod, and Ricardo Leon Guerrero each contributed two hits as BBCC cruised to a 13-3 victory.
With a dominant weekend performance, BBCC improved to 10-4 on the season and now sets its sights on hosting Skagit Valley College at home this upcoming weekend.
