After splitting a weekday series against Spokane, the Big Bend Community College Vikings hosted Centralia College for a four-game set on Saturday, March 1, and Sunday, March 2. With hopes of getting back on track, Dylan Schaefer took the mound for game one. However, early struggles and defensive miscues put BBCC in an early hole. Schaefer exited after 2 2/3 innings, allowing five runs—only two of them earned. Cole McKinnon followed with 3 1/3 innings of relief, giving up three runs but keeping the Vikings within striking distance. Entering the seventh inning, BBCC trailed 8-6, but back-to-back walks allowed two more runs to score, leading to a 10-6 loss. Rory Swanson led the offense with a 3-for-5 performance, while Ricardo Leon Guerrero, JT Penrod, and Roman Basurto each chipped in with two hits.
In game two, Garin Gurtler took the hill and delivered another strong performance, tossing six innings of one-run baseball with six strikeouts and no walks. Garrison Garton took over and continued the dominance, throwing three shutout innings, allowing no hits, and striking out four. With the pitching staff keeping Centralia in check, the offense did just enough to secure a 5-1 victory. Ricardo Leon Guerrero, Oak Held, Roman Basurto, and Camron Fleck all collected hits in the win.
Sunday's game three saw sophomore Brendan McKinley on the mound. He flashed signs of his freshman-year form, throwing 5 2/3 innings and allowing three runs while striking out eight. Talan Wright followed with 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. The offense sparked from the top of the order, with Rylan Osbjornsen and Camron Fleck both collecting 3 hits. BBCC led 6-3 entering the final inning before turning to closer Nolan Soderstrom, who secured his third save of the season by leaving the bases loaded in a scoreless inning.
The series finale was a struggle for BBCC, as they fell behind 4-0 after two innings. The wheels fell off on both the offensive and defesnive sides of the ball, and the Vikings ultimately suffered a 13-3 loss in just seven innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. Nolan Webster, AJ Glenn, Nicholas Kemker, and Alex Hirai were the only Vikings to collect hits in the loss.
With the series split, BBCC now turns its focus to hosting Grays Harbor and Walla Walla Community College in a three-team round-robin this upcoming weekend at Big Bend Community College.
