The Lady Vikings thrilled the home crowd at the Peter C. DeVries Center on Wednesday night as Big Bend took three straight sets from Columbia Basin (25-20, 25-20, 25-17) en route to winning its home opener.
The navy & green were led offensively by Sadie Nielsen (FR, Moses Lake, WA) who finished the match with 12 kills, and Ryana Recustodio (SO, Kodiak, AK) with 10 kills. JoAndra Wilson (SO, Lapwai, ID) and Hailey Miller (SO, Ephrata, WA) each added 7 kills in the winning effort.
Setting up these hitters were Martina Wilder (FR, St. Anthony, ID) and Madison Shrope (FR, Oakesdale, WA) who had 28 and 11 assists respectively.
Defensively, Ashlee Addams (FR, Firth, ID) led the Lady Vikings with 16 digs with Miller adding 12, Dakota Egbert (FR, Connell, WA) 7 and Recustodio 6.
The win was a positive step forward for Big Bend who had a tough 2016-17 season.
"My number one goal (last season) was getting the culture headed in the right direction and we accomplished that despite the record," said second-year Head Coach Michael De Hoog. "We are looking to continually build off of the foundation laid last season based on our core values of integrity, trust, effort, academics, family, and service. This team understands that we are going to do things the right way and I am excited to see their growth as players, as students, and most importantly as people."
Big Bend Volleyball will be back in action at home again tonight (Thursday, Sept. 6) at 4 p.m. trying to pick up another "W" against Lin-Benton.
