It was just the first game of the season, but it looked like the new faces on the floor for Big Bend and the returning sophomores were already in lockstep Saturday afternoon as the Lady Vikings opened the 2018-19 season with a victory over Olympic College, 81-54.
Coming off their first postseason appearance since 2002-03 last season and finishing third in the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC), the Lady Vikings had some big shoes to fill from last year's starting five. However, if Saturday's performance was any indication, the blue and green have successfully recruited and reloaded their roster with a talented group of incoming freshmen student-athletes.
Freshman forward Hannah Wilson (Rexburg, ID) enjoyed an amazing debut dropping 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting while pulling down 7 rebounds and dishing out 3 assists. Returning sophomores Leah Dougherty (Rexburg, ID) and Miranda Johnson (Salt Lake City, UT) added 14 and 11 points respectively with Dougherty also grabbing 5 steals.
Freshman Kayla Luke (Sugar City, ID) did a yeoman's job running the offense in her first outing in a BBCC uniform scoring 6 points, handing out 5 assists, and grabbing 3 steals, while Freshman Kelsey Sorenson (Price, UT) rounded out the starting five with 5 points, 3 steals, 2 assists, and 5 rebounds.
Big Bend also got 25 points from its bench including a 9-point effort from sophomore Sydney Bishop (Pleasant Grove, UT).
The Lady Vikings won't take the floor again until November 30 when they will play host to the Eastern Washington Club team at 7 p.m.
