Four Big Bend softball athletes earn Easton/NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete honors; team ranked No. 18 in the country with combined 3.390 GPA

As a team, Big Bend's student-athletes finished the year with a combined 3.390-grade point average which ranked No. 18 in the entire country. Individually, Chance Barg (3.910), Aubree Barney (3.630), Dacia Hobbs (3.840), and Savannah Hughes (3.880)were named 2017-18 Easton/NFCA All-American Scholar-Athletes.

The Big Bend Community College softball team has been honored by Easton and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) after being recognized with the 18th-highest-grade point average (GPA) in the country for the 2017-18 academic year. The Vikings combined GPA totaled 3.390.

Individually, Chance Barg (3.910), Aubree Barney (3.630), Dacia Hobbs (3.840), and Savannah Hughes (3.880) were also honored as Easton/NFCA All-American Scholar-Athletes.

"We are very proud of these student-athletes and their successes both academically and athletically," said Big Bend Community College President Terry Leas. "We are also proud of our athletic department and coaches for recognizing and emphasizing the importance of being successful in both areas."

Big Bend was the only softball team in the Northwest Athletic Conference that was recognized as a team.

"These student-athletes are an outstanding example of exactly what we are trying to do here at Big Bend as an athletic department," said Athletic Director Mark Poth. "Our coaches work hard to recruit quality athletes, but also athletes with good character that will represent Big Bend well. Congratulations to Coach (Michael) Garoutte and our softball team on this well-deserved honor. We are very proud of them."

Individually, 6,280 softball players earned Easton/NFCA Scholar-Athlete honors. The rankings and honors recognize the academic prowess of softball teams across the Association's membership categories. Community and junior colleges amassed a total of 553 recipients for the 2017-18 academic year.
