Big Bend Softball sitting 14th in NWAC RPI - playoffs likely

A split with Wenatchee would all but clinch a playoff spot for the Vikings softball team this weekend. Currently, Big Bend is sitting in the 14th spot in the RPI.

Unless there is some craziness that happens throughout the week, the Vikings softball team will most likely be a part of the 16-team Northwest Athletic Conference playoff picture. However, a split this weekend on the road against Wenatchee Valley would go a long way in removing all doubt. The Knights swept Big Bend earlier this season at home, but the Vikings have seasoned as a team as should put up a much tougher fight this go round.

The Vikings are coming off a tough Friday-Saturday stretch in which they lost 3-of-4 games at home against Yakima Valley and Columbia Basin - two teams that they had swept earlier in the season on the road.

Friday

Game 1 BBCC 7, Yakima 0

Freshman pitcher Bailey Christensen tossed a complete-game shutout while striking out nine Yakima hitters. She had a perfect game rolling until a hit batsman in the fifth and a no-hitter into the sixth.

Aubree Barney and Ember Armstrong both left the yard for the Vikings and Lynsey Valverde went 3-for-3 at the plate scoring 2 runs and driving in another.

Highlights:

Dacia Hobbs, 2-for-3

Lynsey Valverde, 3-for-3, 2 runs, 1 RBI

Abree Barney 2-for-2, 2 runs 2 RBIs, HR

Ember Armstrong 1-for-3, 1 RBI, HR

Game 2 Yakima 7, BBCC 3

A slow start at the plate put Big Bend behind the 8-ball and they couldn't recover. Christensen had another good outing on the mound (striking out seven) but the Vikings could get the bats going.

Hailey Huelsman smashed two home runs, and Savannah Hughes added another but that was all of the offense BBCC could muster in the loss.

Highlights:

Dacia Hobbs, 2-for-4, 2B

Savannah Hughes, 2-for-3, 1 RBI, HR

Hailey Huelsman, 2-for-2, 2 runs, 2 RBIs,  2 HR

Saturday

Game 1 Columbia Basin 17, BBCC 7

The Big Bend bats were dormant for the majority of Saturday and the Columbia Basin bats were just the opposite. Hailey Huelsman cranked her third and fourth home runs of the weekend (including a Grand Slam) but it wasn't enough to power the Vikings to a win.

Highlights:

Dacia Hobbs, 1-for-4, 1 RBI, HR

Ember Armstrong, 1-for-2, HP, 2 runs

Hailey Huelsman, 2-for-3, 2 runs, 5 RBIs, 2 HR

Savannah Hughes, 2-for-3

Game 2  Columbia Basin 15, BBCC 6

The Vikings looked to rebound from the early loss scoring four runs in the first inning, but they couldn't hold that lead.

Highlights:

Dacia Hobbs, 3-for-5, 2 runs

Lynsey Valverde, 2-for-5

Chance Barg, 2-for-4
